The essay examines the nature of party identification and the 2015 gubernatorial election: a case study of voting behavior in Sabon Gari Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The work looked at party identification and how it affected voting behavior of the people. The complexity and diversity of the Nigerian society have made various factors to influence voters behavior during elections with most parties been similar or lacking in any fundamental differences in terms of ideology and programmes and the issues and personality of candidates hardly matter where the electorates makes the voting choice. Therefore, this research work looked into what party identification is, the correlation between party identification, voting behavior and voting outcome with the assumption that those people who identify with a party tend to vote for their party for various offices in high percentage and that religion, ethnicity and other variables play a decisive role. The research encompassed the use of primary data such as questionnaire and interview and secondary data such as books, journals, newspapers, magazines etc. It was found out that among the various factors that played a role in influencing voting choices, party identification had the highest percentage with respondents showing consistency in terms of longevity of party support. And that despite majority of the respondents identifying with a party because of its party programmes, there were still some for whom primordial ties influenced their choice in voting a political party. Therefore, the researcher recommended that there should be independent opinion and choices of voters which truly depict the essence of democracy meaning that people should be allowed to make their own personal decisions without external influences such as family, religion, ethnicity or any other primordial factors.
